Mrs. Samara Romo
1st Grade
Room 101
I have been a teacher since I was a little girl. I started off with a class of stuffed animals and soon after that enrolled my two younger brothers into my little classroom. Additionally, with the influence of a math professor father and social worker mother, when I came across the Teach forAmericatable at the job fair during my senior year of college, I knew that it was for me. 11 years later, I am still teaching.
I was a Human Development major at Cornell University with a concentration in Child Development. I received my Masters in Education from Arizona State University while teaching first grade in Phoenix, Arizona. After five years there, I moved toChicagoand have been at Newberry ever since. This will be my eleventh year teaching and my sixth year at Newberry.
In 2007, I achieved my National Board Certification in English as a New Language. Growing up in a Spanish speaking home and being enrolled in ESL classes in Kindergarten, I feel that I have come full circle and have a personal passion for teaching children whose first language is not English. This passion fits with my educational philosophy that all children can learn and it is my responsibility to reach every student.
When I am not teaching you can find me at home with my husband and two cats or out riding my bicycle or running. I also love to sing and am a soprano 1 in the Apollo Chorus of Chicago (http://www.apollochorus.org/). I hope you can make it to one of my concerts!
