Welcome to Newberry! My name is Ms. Katie Blatchford and I teach third grade.
My path to becoming a teacher wasnt the most direct route, but now that Ive arrived I feel lucky to have the chance to work with children every day. I moved to Chicago after graduating from University of Iowa with a B.A. in Journalism and Anthropology. After several years of selling and developing financial research for Morningstar, Inc., I realized that was not what I am passionate about. I visited my sister teaching in her third-grade classroom and saw that being an educator is the most engaging, challenging and rewarding profession. I completed my M.A. in Education at Roosevelt University and was thrilled to join the community of dedicated professionals, caring parents and outstanding students at Newberry.
Each day I focus on building a comfortable and caring learning environment for my students. Every student has a unique learning style and I believe that it is my job to teach each student in the way they learn best, so that every student is exceeding the expectations we set. My enthusiasm for teaching deepens with each student I meet and I feel fortunate to play a part in their lives.
Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time outdoors. Biking, water sports, and hiking top my list. I love to travel and try to visit at least one new place every year. At home, I love to spend time with family and friends and get lost in a great book. I look forward to this year and cant wait to meet each family in our room!
