I am so excited to be starting my second year at Newberry this year.  Prior to Newberry, I taught fourth-eighth grade for seven years on the west side of the city.  I feel so fortunate to be teaching at such an amazing school with great administration, teachers, families, and of course, students!

I am originally from Allen Park, Michigan and after graduating high school, I attended Greenville College in southern Illinois where I received my teaching degree.  After graduation from college, I moved to Chicago to begin my teaching career.  In 2006, I earned my Masters in Curriculum and Education from Olivet University.  I am committed to keeping up with best practices and the latest research on teaching methods so that I can bring my best to my students.

Outside of the classroom I enjoy spending time with my friends and family.  I love to stay active (you may even catch a glimpse of me biking around the city or rollerblading along the lakefront!) and I have enjoyed kickboxing for the last six years.  I love to travel and have visited many interesting countries including Italy, England, France, Spain, and Mexico.  But, my true passion in life is without a doubt, reading.  It is not uncommon for me to be in the midst of reading several books at any given time.  My goal as a teacher is to convey this love of reading to my students and spark that same interest within them. I am especially excited about coaching Newberry’s Battle of the Books team again this year.

For me, teaching is not just a “job”, it is a passion.  I work hard to create a sense of community in my classroom.  I value mutual respect and collaboration in my classroom and set very high expectations for both myself and the students I teach.  It is my goal to help students become lifelong readers and to see the value and enjoyment of reading, both in and out of school.
