What I really enjoy about teaching is the feeling that I get when one of my students finally understands a concept that they have been struggling with for a long time.  The feeling is indescribable and makes all of the long days worth it.

I was raised in Mercer Island, Washington, a suburb of Seattle, and came to the Midwest when I was eighteen to attend Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri.  After graduating with a degree in psychology, I came to Chicago to pursue a career in sales.  While working in the sales department of a freight brokerage firm, I realized that something was missing and that I needed to work with kids.  I attended classes in the evenings and earned my Master’s in Education from DePaul University.  I accepted a position teaching math at Oscar Mayer Elementary School, where I worked for four years before coming to Newberry.

Newberry is a special school where students from all over the city come to learn and grow together.  My classroom is a place where students can be free to make mistakes because the best learning comes from trial and error.  I believe that every child has the capacity to succeed and it is my mission to make sure that all of my students achieve success.

Besides teaching math at Newberry, I also coach the Newberry girls’ track and field teams and am head of the girls basketball program at Walter Payton High School.

I live in Chicago with my wife, who is also a teacher, my two cats, Jade and Namaste, and my rabbit, Bailey.
