My mother was a successful, lifetime teacher, which inspired me to follow in her footsteps. As a lifeguard in high school, I enjoyed teaching swimming lessons, which fostered an early development of my organizational, leadership, and nurturing skills.

I received my B.A. in Elementary Education from theUniversityofIowain 1998 after I completed my student teaching atAldineSchool DistrictinHouston,Texas. I initially taught first grade when I met, Debbie Diller, who instructed the Guided Reading training in the district. Subsequently, my focus was English as a Second Language (ESL), whereby I completed my certification and taught sixth through eighth grade ESL-Newcomer Reading, English, and Social Studies.

My family moved toChicagoin 2002, and I joined CPS as the Reading Specialist, ESL, and Bilingual lead teacher atBelmontCraginSchoolduring their inaugural school year. I followed my goal of continuing education by achieving National Board Certification in Reading-Language Arts, Early and Middle Childhood. In addition, I fulfilled an elective duty by mentoring other teachers seeking this certification.

In 2006 I joined the team at Newberry by teaching third grade, seeking new challenges and a zest for a classroom of my own students. During the 2011 school year, I will be a part-time reading teacher, assisting in the reading development of students with a range of abilities.
