Annual Events

First Day of School Welcome - This is a great way to calm parents' first day jitters and meet other Newberry families. The PTA provides coffee, juice, pastries, and the opportunity to socialize with fellow parents.

New to Newberry Gold & Silver Festival - The PTA's newest event is a social and informational gathering held shortly after the school year begins. Learn more about the nuances of Newberry, meet some of your child's schoolmates, and get to know returning and new to Newberry parents.

Fall Festival - This annual celebration for grades K-2 includes seasonal activities, games, fall treats, and all-around fun. The Fall Festival is held during school hours in October.

Movie Night - Students in grades 3-5 come together on a Friday in early Spring for an evening with friends which includes a movie and refreshments and, of course, fun for everyone!

Winter Dance - Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders count the days to our most popular event for older students. Held in the school gym, the Winter Dance features an age-appropriate DJ, the kids' favorite music, and dance games that will bring even a wall flower out onto the floor.

Taste of Newberry - Share a table and your favorite ethnic dish with other Newberry families at this potluck dinner. We provide beverages and eating ware; you provide food and flavor!

Teacher Appreciation Luncheon - This annual event held on Spring Report Card Pick Up Day celebrates the fine work of Newberry's faculty and staff. The PTA provides a catered lunch and desserts made by our families.

Volunteer Appreciation Party - Parent participation at Newberry is one of the things that makes our school so special. The PTA's year-end celebration of parent volunteer efforts is a social event for adults in June.

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) - The PTA enjoys a partnership with Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. whose mission is to prepare and motivate children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most. At Newberry, RIF books are distributed to all Newberry students three times during the academic year - usually in December, February and April. Students are able to select one age-appropriate book each time from a wide variety of engaging titles.

Garden Beautification - The Newberry Academy Discovery Garden is primarily maintained by the Garden Committee, a group of volunteer teachers, parents, and students, lead by Newberry teacher Ms. Jean Capper and sponsored in part by the PTA. During appropriate weather months, the committee works in the garden, often twice a month on the weekends. The Discovery Garden is a wonderful extension of our school that is enjoyed by our students and everyone who walk into or past our building... year round!

The Newberry Academy Newsletter - Five times a year our school newsletter The Newsberry is published and distributed via "back pack mail". Our newsletter is chock full of information regarding upcoming events, important school dates, details of Newberry activities, classroom information, and student awards. And now it can even be accessed online! Additionally, If your company is interested in purchasing advertisement space, please contact editor Kelly Louchios for further information. Upon approval your ad will be placed in the next issue of Newsberry.

Email Blasts - A database of email addresses allows us to keep the Newberry Community informed. Weekly Backpack Mail Digests give a brief summary of notices, information and other papers that are sent home with students on "Tuesday Newsday". Occasional Newberry Community Notes share programs, websites, and other information to help build the home-school partnership and foster community at Newberry. Other special notices are sent out as needed. All families are welcome to join the Email Blast list by simply emailing the PTA Board (newberry_pta@yahoo.com) and requesting to be placed on the list. Removal from the list is accomplished by an email request to the same address.

Note = All events are free of charge. Some are grade or age-specific.

Fundraising Activities

The PTA sponsors numerous fundraising activities throughout the year which directly support all PTA-sponsored events and activities. Our goal is to provide opportunities to contribute for every family at every income level. Some families choose just one or two activities to support. Others participate in several or all of these programs. Please don't be overwhelmed by the extent of PTA fundraisers. We encourage you to choose the ones that are right for you. Remember that every donation, no matter the size, makes a BIG difference and helps to enrich your student's school experience!

Market Day - This long-standing program offers a wide range of food and other grocery items for purchase each month. Order forms are sent home monthly or you can order online. Anyone can buy Market Day products - parents, grandparents, neighbors, or friends. Newberry receives a percentage of all sales.

Ten to Grow On - Our annual campaign to "help start the school year off right" requests a family donation of $10 for each of its Newberry student and alumni. Contributions provide seed funds for PTA activities throughout the year. We distribute a "10 to Grow On" request letter in the fall.

Barnes & Noble Book Fair - A day of shopping and fun activities for kids. The Barnes & Noble store at 1441 W. Webster donates a portion of sales from purchasers who turn in a "book fair voucher." Anyone can support Newberry this day - families, teachers, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. Vouchers are distributed in late October (you can make as many copies as you like for friends and family) AND are available from store cashiers that day. This event takes place mid-November

Holiday Bazaar - A Newberry tradition for many years, the Holiday Bazaar features sweets, arts and crafts, and other fun items for sale to students. Just a few dollars is enough to your child to fill a bag with small gifts and treats. Many of the items are donated by school families. All Newberry Students anticipate this mid-December event!

Jewel Days - Jewel grocery stores offer a benefit days program, where a percentage of the purchases made by Newberry families and friends is given back to the PTA. At each store, the program runs for a three-day period – Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Newberry’s designated days, Newberry participants shop at any store location, present the identification slip at checkout, and the PTA receives a portion back from the sales. Check the calendar for this year’s Jewel dates.

The PTA retains the entire $5 from each coupon packet we sell. Amazon Assoicates Program - Newberry PTA has partnered with Amazon.com. By clicking on the link found on the homepage of this website, any purchases made through Amazon returns 4% to 8% of that money to the Newberry PTA. It doesn't cost you or the school a thing. All you need to do is click on the link! Gift certificates, books, electronics, clothes, house wares and so much more can be purchased through Amazon … and your student benefits!

Spring Benefit - Each year the Friends of Newberry sponsors an annual fundraiser which includes lunch/dinner; raffles; a silent auction with hundreds of great finds ranging from housewares to dining certificates to sports items, including something for every budget; and an entertaining live auction featuring amazing classroom projects by our students. The benefit is opportunity for everyone in the Newberry family to support our fundraising goals. Children, parents, grandparents, and even friends can contribute by helping soliciting donations for the auction, selling raffle tickets, volunteering at the event itself, buying tickets to attend, and much more. The spring benefit is our biggest and definitely most fun fundraiser of the year. This event is for adults only. For more information contact this year’s benefit chairperson at benefit@newberryacademy.org or see the Spring Benefit page on this site.
