Walter L. Newberry Math & Science Academy
Today's scholars, tomorrow's leaders
Welcome to Preschool. My name is Amanda Radcliff and I have been a teacher at NewberryAcademy for thirteen years. I graduated from RooseveltUniversity with a degree in Early Childhood Education. I was very fortunate to have done my student teaching at Newberry in Kindergarten and first grade. Newberry is my first school as a teacher and it has always been an honor and a privilege to be a teacher here.
During my teaching career I have taught kindergarten, second grade and third grade. In 2009 Newberry opened a Tuition Based Preschool Program. I have been the preschool teacher since the program began. I have always loved teaching but it was not until I took on this new adventure that my love for teaching young children grew exponentially. Our days in preschool are filled with wonder and excitement. The curriculum is literacy based and has 10 thematic units of study. Creativity is abundant as we get to play and explore, discover and learn together. It is a very gratifying responsibility and I am thankful that my relationship with my students and families is strong.
Outside of the classroom I enjoy gardening and spending time with my husband and our welsh terrier ‘Alfie”. I love spending my summers in N. Michigan at our cabin which is on the Mackinaw Straits. I like to work on my garden, bike ride, hike, kayak and paddle board. Although I love my summers, I get excited every year at the opportunity to see returning students and to meet my new preschoolers as they start their academic journey. Preschool is the foundation for the rest of their lives and I am proud to be a part of that journey.
Hello there to the Newberry community of students, families and its staff! Thank you for stopping by! I recently joined the Newberry team this school year and am ecstatic to be here. First, let me introduce myself. My name is Victoria Marquez, but you can call me Ms. Vicky. I was born and raised in Chicago. I am very happy to be working in the Preschool program as a Teacher’s Assistant. I recently came from The Gardner School in the West Loop where I worked with children aged from 6 weeks to 5 years old! It was a life-changing experience that opened my eyes to the positive role that teachers play in a child’s life.
I believe that life is a journey and without a great education I wouldn’t be where I am today. When I was deciding where I wanted my journey to go, I was torn between a degree in Education or the Arts. Alas, my creativity won me over and I chose to move to Wisconsin where I earned a Bachelors of Science in Photography. But my passion to work with children never left my side. It was then that I decided to work towards the other dream that never left me. Although this is my 2nd year in Education, I have over a decades’ worth of experience working with children. I am a silly person by nature. This is why Preschool is the perfect fit for me! I never go one second without smiling and laughing. I don’t think a job can get better than that!
When I am not working with my favorite sprouts of Preschool, I simply enjoy whatever experience comes my way. I love anything creative such as arts and crafts, music and going to the theater. I never feel more like myself than when I’m in an artistic environment.
Welcome to Preschool! Let the reading, writing and counting commence!
The students call me Ms. Viki. I recently joined the wonderful preschool team, here at Newberry Math and Science Academy, as a Teacher’s Assistant. Though new to room 116, this is my second year at the school, where I previously worked as an educator and coordinator for the after school program Right At School. I am so happy and grateful to be a proper Bobcat family member.
Ever since my college days, back in my native Republic of Macedonia and through the past 8 years I’ve been calling Chicago home, I have been working with elementary school children of different ages, in both volunteer and professional capacity. Preschool is definitely my favorite age now. It is amazing to watch little preschoolers’ faces light up when they discover and learn something new. It’s been such an unexpected gift being able to share the beginnings of their journey as lifelong learners.
I love running, hiking, travelling and spending vacations with family on the other side of Lake Michigan and in Europe. In my spare time I try to take full advantage of the rich cultural scene our great city has to offer.
