10/24/2011- Red Ribbon Week!
Dress-up themes for the week:
- Monday: “Team up against drugs!” – Wear something that shows your favorite sports team!
- Tuesday: “Dream big, drug free!”- Wear your favorite pajamas to school!
- Wednesday: Newberry Spirit Day- Wear the Newberry colors, maroon and gold!
- Thursday: Red Ribbon Spirit Day- Wear red to support a drug free lifestyle.

10/18/2011-10/19/2011 – 8th Grade High School Appointments
Mrs. McKinney and Ms. Holpuch will be having individual appointments with every 8th grade student over the next two days. Students will be given a folder with their ISAT scores, grade reports, and high school application information. Students will speak with the counselors about what schools they are interested in, and how to apply.

10/14/2011- Second Step Enrichment Groups
Today begins the first Second Step Enrichment group. Students can be referred by parent or teacher for extra instruction regarding empathy, problem solving, and anger management. Students will participate for 6 weeks, and will then graduate from the program. Students will rotate in and out throughout the year.

10/04/2011- 7th and 8th Grade Town Hall
Today is the first day of Town Hall! Every Monday during lunch, the 7th and 8th graders are invited to attend a Town Hall meeting with Mrs. McKinney and Ms. Holpuch in the auditorium. Town Hall will serve as a forum for student concerns and suggestions. Students will work together to brainstorm suggestions for the school, and practice problem solving skills.

10/03/2011- 4th Grade Girls Group
Today, Mrs. McKinney and Ms. Holpuch are starting a friendship and sisterhood group for the 4th grade girls. For 6-weeks, all 4th grade girls will participate in this group during their Second Step curriculum block with their homeroom. The goal of the group is to help the girls get to know one another, build skills for making and keeping friends, and to learn to work together.
