May Principal’s Message

Principal’s Message for May 2013

Dear Newberry Academy Families,

We have so many great things to make you aware of for the month of May!  We opened up our May activities with two assemblies from Skateboard Science on the morning of May 2nd in the playlot.  The Skateboard Science group travels from state-to-state presenting how science is part of our everyday life. The troupe uses principles of skateboarding to demonstrate physics and engages students by having them participate in some of their various maneuvers.  Our very own Ms. Wietholter participated in one of the culminating activities!  Photos and a short video clip are available at our website.

On Friday, May 3rd, we will have DePaul University students representing Junior Achievement work with our Upper Grade classrooms on fun and engaging activities centered around money management and learning how businesses work.  We look forward to the active learning and future-planning that will take place that day.

We have seen much momentum surrounding our new Bobcat Buck Store and are appreciative to Mrs. Witczack and Mrs. Clancy for their work at keeping Bobcat Buck prizes up-to-date and fun for our children.  In their collaboration with Mrs. Cipriani, students will be able to “cash in” Bobcat Bucks to participate in a Harlem Shake video in the gymnasium on Thursday, May 9th in the afternoon.  The following day, our high school student Lego-Robotics facilitator will set up a table in the gymnasium during lunch periods to demonstrate the computerized robot, along with future plans for the Newberry Lego-Robotics Club.  Students in Grades 5-8 are eligible to participate in this fun after-school activity next year and we plan on registering for citywide competitions.

This is also an active time of year for our 8th Grade students.  On May 20th, they take their Algebra Exit exams and the following week they head to Washington, DC for a three-day trip with staff chaperones.  We wish them much luck on their test and safety on their trip!  During the week of May 13th, our 8th Grade students will also be taking the EXPLORE test which help their high schools determine placement in Grade 9 classes for next year.  This assessment provides us valuable data enabling us to plan middle school curriculum.

Our Local School Council meeting this month will be held on May 20th at 6pm in the school library.  All are welcome to hear about what’s going on at Newberry.

Sincerely,

Linda Foley-Acevedo
